if you are F1 or M1 visa student, you are eligible to get Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allow you to get employment related to your study field for 1 year. you may apply the OPT at the international student office in your college before your graduation.

if you want to work in US more than 1 year, you need to find employers that are willing to sponsor you a H1b visa.

Reply:As for a work visa, your employer will need to sponsor your visa application. There are certain certificates that must be aquired from the government before you can apply for a work visa. To get those certificates, you will need to already have an employer lined up.

Depending on the kind of work visa, the process for your employer may be expensive, so the fact that you are a person from a foriegn country may lessen the chance that people will hire you (because they will have to pay to get the visa), especially if there is a US citizen with same or similar qualifications applying for the job.

Also, when you apply for the visa, you have a better chance of having it approved if you apply in your home country--so you will have to pay to fly back home. However, if your student visa is still current, you may just be able to change your status from student visa to work visa without going home. It just depends.

Check out the embassy webpage for the country you are from to see what you can do. I worked at a US consulate during the summer and this is what I observed and learned, but I am by no means an expert! Check the websites. Good luck.
